Course Description

Balance is like health – you don’t appreciate it until it’s gone. The consequences of poor balance are many fold and can lead to falls, hospitalisations and fear.

There is no dispute that balance is something that deteriorates as we age. This deterioration can start as early as our forties. However, we can train the balance systems so as to minimise the risk of falls, along with their potentially serious consequences.

In this course you will learn about the primary systems that make up balance and how they are integrated in our bodies. You will gain a comprehensive understanding of common causes of loss of balance and the strategies you can implement to work with these conditions. The theory is broken down to short videos making it easy for you to digest the information. Even though the components of the balance system are complex, here they are explained using simple props and with the focus on the practical implications for you as a movement teacher. The course also comes with a manual providing additional avenues for learning.

You will be given ideas and exercises that can be incorporated into your regular movement practice, both in the studio and as part of homework or in online classes. The course contains an extensive list of exercises that you can start using with your clients today. All the repertoire is filmed and the videos contain information about the focus and purpose for each exercise as well as cueing tips and other useful information when working with clients in the studio or in online classes.

Who is this course for?

Any movement teachers wanting to expand their knowledge when working with older clients, clients with stroke, Parkinson’s, diabetes, peripheral neuropathies from cancer treatments, and any other conditions affecting the visual, sensory or vestibular systems. The strategies learnt in this course are also great to start incorporating in the healthy client group to support strength and balance as they age.
