Course Description

This course is designed to improve a movement professional’s understanding of the structures of the thoracic cavity, and the role of the primary and secondary muscles of breath. A large part of the course is devoted to understanding the anatomy and physiology of the lungs and how this relates to how we work in the studio as a movement professional.

Course participants will gain a better understanding of how breath relates to certain exercises and provides participants with the capacity to critically analyse specific pathologies.

The pathologies and conditions explored include:
// asthma
// pneumonia
// chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)

We also look at strategies for exercises and movements that will help facilitate recovery and minimise the risk of complications from conditions. We discuss strategies for working with people with breathing disorders and different issues that can easily be implemented straight away in the studio. The lessons provide clear instructions on cueing in order to help teachers support their clients in a safe and appropriate manner.

After this course, the student should have an understanding of:
// the bones of the thoracic cavity
// the muscles of the thoracic cavity
// the primary and secondary muscles of breath
// basic physiology of the lungs, and the process of gas exchange
// concepts around asthma, and associated medications for asthma treatment
// discussion of appropriate exercises and modifications for people with asthma
// concepts around pneumonia and the long term complications from infections
